2019 marks the 13th year of offering the Zachary Weston Memorial Scholarship to a graduating senior at Platt High School. This year, we received an unprecedented 13 nominations - for 9 individual students, a reflection on the terrific, kind, and civic-minded group of kids graduating from Platt this year.

We are so happy to be able to award this year’s scholarship to Ian Agnew. Ian plans to attend Southern CT State University become a physical education teacher, with an emphasis on fitness for students with special needs. Despite personal challenges, tragedies, and setbacks, Ian’s strength, humility, and determination to succeed impressed not only our scholarship committee, but his teachers and peers alike. Ian received three nominations for this award. We are also pleased to announce that we were able to increase the amount of the award from $1,000 to $1,500 this year.

The Board was also impressed with Jeoffrey Vazquez Varela, a soft-spoken young man who plans to attend the Sistas Academy of Cosmetology to become a barber. Moving to Meriden after Hurricane Maria devastated his home in Puerto Rico, Jeoffrey has shown a commitment to his education, to helping his peers, and to finding a career that will help support his family, regardless of where he is living. The Foundation's Board of Directors is pleased to be able to award a $500 Q. Walter Peabody Award to Jeoffrey to help with his tuition for school.

Ian and Jeoffrey, congratulations! Thank you for being who you are. Keep spreading that kindness and inspiring others. We wish you all the best!
